Debt counselling is a formal process in South Africa designed to help individuals who are struggling to repay their debts. It’s a legal remedy introduced by the National Credit Act (NCA) to protect over-indebted consumers from creditors while helping them repay what they owe in a manageable way.
Debt counselling helps you restructure your debt into one affordable monthly payment, while protecting your assets (like your house and car) from repossession and stopping legal action from creditors.
While debt review isn’t free, the fees are regulated and transparent. You can expect modest upfront costs and structured monthly charges. The most significant upfront cost is the restructuring fee, which is usually within regulated limits and directly tied to your repayment plan.
If you are unemployed, you generally cannot apply for debt review.
You should consider debt counselling if:
You are over-indebted (i.e., your expenses and debt payments exceed your income).
You want to avoid legal action or repossession.
You are committed to paying your debts, but need a structured plan to do it.
You are employed or have a reliable income.
No, you cannot take out a loan while under debt review.
No, you cannot be blacklisted while under debt review — but your credit report will reflect that you are under debt counselling, which restricts access to new credit.
Yes – but you usually don’t need to go in person. Your debt counsellor will appoint an attorney on your behalf which will deal with all your in court appearances.
Missing a payment under debt review is serious and can put your entire debt restructuring plan at risk.
The great thing about your free debt assessment is that it gives you a clear picture of what your Debt Review will look like. From what you can expect your reduced monthly repayment plan will be, to how long your Debt Review will take.
